Program Notes:I’ve had an unusually good time writing ardent life for its first soloist, Andrew Levin. He provided me with some good ideas of what he would like in a work for trumpet and orchestra (it also exists in a version for trumpet and piano) and the piece materialized directly from his just desires. I developed a series of harmonies which cycles through the core of the work, generated all the material from what you hear first as the bass line in the opening, and have also tried to provide something pleasurable for each member of the orchestra. It is inscribed to and for Andrew Levin, and was commissioned by the Atlantic Chapter of the Music Library Association for the Association’s 76th annual meeting in Pittsburgh, March 1 - 4, 2007.
